The East Bay's Mediterranean climate — warm dry summers and mild wet winters — creates unique challenges for lawn care. Here are five tips our team swears by.
1. Water Deep, Not Often
Shallow, frequent watering encourages weak root systems. Instead, water deeply 2-3 times per week during summer. This trains roots to grow deeper, making your lawn more drought-resistant.
Pro tip: Water early in the morning (before 10am) to minimize evaporation.
2. Mow High in Summer
During the hottest months, raise your mower blade to 3-3.5 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces water evaporation, and crowds out weeds naturally.
3. Aerate in Fall
Contra Costa and Alameda County soils tend to compact over summer. Fall aeration (September-October) opens up the soil so water, air, and nutrients can reach the roots.
4. Choose the Right Grass
Not all grass thrives in the East Bay. Tall fescue and bermuda grass perform well in our climate. If you're starting fresh or overseeding, choose varieties rated for USDA zones 9-10.
5. Don't Skip Fall Fertilization
The most important fertilization of the year happens in fall. It strengthens roots before winter dormancy and gives your lawn a head start in spring.
